Commercial brand products - Ingredients/Preservatives
Propylene Glycol
- This compound, known
to cause illness in dogs is also used to maintain the right texture and
moisture and to tie up the water content, thus inhibiting the growth of
bacteria. Documented research shows that it causes hematologic
abnormalities, central nervous system depression and kidney damage.
Propyl Gallate -
Manufacturers add this
chemical to retard spoilage but it is suspected of causing liver damage.
Potassium Sorbate -
A commonly used
preservative that is chemically similar to fat.
Butylated
Hydroxytoluene (BHT) -
This poorly tested
preservative is implicated by some scientists as a cause of liver damage,
metabolic stress, fetal abnormalities and serum cholesterol increase. It
is also associated with esophageal cancer.
Butylated
Hydroxyanisole (BHA) -
Both BHA and BHT have
been shown to depress the immune system by lowering the body's white blood
cell count and to inhibit the absorption of glucose, a process that is
critical to normal body functions. It has been associated with stomach and
urinary cancer.
Ethoxyquin (EQ) -
Originally developed
for use in the production of rubber, this common preservative is among the
compounds suspected of causing severe health problems in dogs. It has also
been used as an insecticide and pesticide.
Sodium Nitrate -
This compound is
widely used as both a preservative and a red colouring agent. Sodium
nitrate used in food can produce powerful carcinogenic substances known as
nitrosamines. Resources:
